We are on a roll!
Hal McMinn brought in three (count ‘em) three petitions at the August business meeting so we will have a lot of work to do during September. With what we have in the works, this will make 13 new members for Shiloh Lodge so far this year.
Make plans now to bring your spouse to the business meeting on September 3rd. This will be a catered dinner to honor our Past Masters, so reservations are in order. Please call your Master, Secretary or W\ Bro. Russ Mason to get your name in the hopper. A free will offering will be collected to help offset the cost of the dinner.
Also, on September 24th we will be conferring the Master’s degree on three candidates and want to fill all the chairs with Past Masters. If you haven’t been to lodge for a while, this will be an excellent time to renew old friendships.
To fill out a busy September schedule, Shiloh will be hosting a breakfast for the Grand Master and several of the Grand Lodge officers. This will be held at the Omaha Home for Boys dining room at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, September 26th. Tickets go for $9.00 and reservations are a must. You don’t want to miss this special event!
Fraternally Yours,
Charles W. Amidon

BATTLE OF SHILOH
At the terrible battle of Pittsburg Landing, or Shiloh, Capt. G. A. Strong, belonging to one of the Michigan regiments, was fatally wounded on Sunday, the 6th of April. Captain Strong was a Mason and Knight Templar. When he received the fatal wound and fell on the battlefield, he had on his person a fine gold watch, and wore a Masonic breast-pin. A captain of Texas Rangers approached him, as he lay on the ground, and discovered the Masonic emblem on his person. Knowing that the wounded officer would be robbed, and perhaps murdered, if left where he had fallen, the Texan had him carried to a tent, where he bound up his wounds as well as he could, furnished him with water, and took means to protect him from insult and robbery. The battle was still raging, and was renewed on the next day, Monday, when the northern troops succeeded in repulsing the southern army, and in recovering the grounds, tents, etc., they had lost on Sunday. On Tuesday, Captain Strong was found in the tent where the Texan officer had left him, still alive and fully sensible, and with his valuables safe upon his person. It was observed by one, who gave an account of this occurrence, that a Mason, though a rebel, and in arms against his government, could not do otherwise than protect and aid his wounded, dying opponent, with such a talisman of peace intervening between them.
GETTYSBURG, JULY 3, 1863
On Cemetery Ridge, during Pickett's Charge, Confederate Brigadier General Lewis A. Armistead and Union Major General Winfield S. Hancock were on the opposite sides of a fierce battle. Both were Masonic Brothers, who in calmer times had shared Fraternal ties. As the battle raged, each lay wounded within a few hundred yards of each other. Armistead's cries for help were heard by several Brothers in the Union ranks who came to the aid of their Brother, though a confederate officer. Captain Henry Bingham, a Union Aid to Hancock came upon the mortally wounded Armistead, who asked Bingham to relay a message of regret and convey his personal effects, including a Masonic watch, to his old friend Hancock. Armistead died two days later without seeing Hancock. But, his message was received and the spirit of Brotherhood survived
