Shiloh Lodge #327
November 1998 Trestleboard

  From the East

Thank you to everyone that could come out and help support our Grand Master’s Breakfast. We had a really good turn out and feel that it was once again a success. We look forward to continueing this event in the future.

Congratulations to our newly elected officers of the Lodge! For those of you not present, the following officers were elected for 1999: W\M\Scott Oglesby, S\W\ Rick Benson, J\W\ John Maxell, Treas. John Olson & Sec. Paul Rutherford (not quite sure how that last one happened!).

I would like to thank Charlie Amidon for presenting our first Masonic Education Program in November. I highly recommend you come out as we will have some very informative programs in the coming months.

I also really appreciate everyone who came out and helped us prove up the lodge in EA and FC. We will be doing it again on the 9th for the MM degree, so I hope we can get lots of help for that night, too.

We would like your input on the proposed Bylaws changes as printed to the right, so please look them over and let us know your thoughts before the next meeting. Better yet, come on out to Lodge and help us discuss them in person!

Hope you all have a good Thanksgiving!

Fraternally Yours,

Paul D. Rutherford
Worshipful Master-1998

Do You Have The Time?

Many times in conversation with members, one often hear the lament that: “I would certainly like to attend my lodge meetings more often, but I just don’t seem to have the time”.

A local magazine made some very interesting observations for the benefit of people who “don’t seem to know where their time goes”, when they released the following figures showing the leisure hours we still have:

Hours in year 8,760 (365 days)
Sleeping Hours 2,920 (8 hrs/day)
Working Hours 1,960 (9 hrs/day)
Travel Hours 490 (2 hrs/day)
Eating Hours 1,095 (3 hrs/day)
Dress/Undress 365 (1 hr/day)
Total Hours Consumed 6,830
Do As You Please Hours 1,930

Thus, leisure time averages out to 80 days of 24 hours each, or nearly 22% of the year.

Based on the above figures, it would appear that 3 or 6 hours a month (1 or 2 meetings per month) spent in the enjoyment of fraternal association with your Brethren, would amount to a very small percentage of the 1,930 hours per year at your disposal. Food for thought.

Proposed Bylaw Changes

#1 Summer Months & Holidays: The following change was read at the November Regular Communication and entered into the minutes of that meeting. A vote will be held on this proposed change at the next Regular Communication on December 2, 1998. This Bylaw change is in response to a request by Grand Lodge to account for our being dark in the Summer, which our Bylaws do not currently provide. The proposed change is as follows:

Amend Article I, Section 1 by adding the following two (2) paragraphs:

“When a Regular Communication date falls on a National Holiday, the Regular Communication will be held on the next Wednesday, with proper notice being mailed to the membership.

No Regular Communication will be held during the months of July and August of each year except in cases of emergency. Such Regular Communications may be called during these months by order of the Worshipful Master, providing written notice is mailed to all members two weeks prior to such regular Communication stating the purpose and agenda. No other business, except that listed in suchg notice, will be conducted.”

#2 Business Meeting Times: Much discussion was held at the November meeting regarding the possibility of starting our Business Meetings earlier that the current 7:30 p.m..

Suggestions that night ranged from starting at 6:00 p.m. to no change at all. In an effort to get additional input before formally proposing a Bylaws change to be brought to a vote, we request your comments.

Please either attend the December 2nd Business Meeting or contact Paul Rutherford or Scott Oglesby prior to the 2nd.

We will discuss this issue on the 2nd and, based on that discussion and the input received from the members, may draft a proposed Bylaws change to be voted on at the January Business Meeting.
