Shiloh Lodge #327
March 1999 Trestleboard

  From the East

I’m back from my first (but certainly not my last) Grand Lodge, and if you have not yet attended one, I can only say that you are missing out on a great opportunity, not only to learn about Masonry in general, but to meet masons from all over Nebraska and create friendships that can last a lifetime. As you probably know by now, Shiloh’s own Rite Worshipful Phil Lorenzen was elected to the position of Grand Senior Warden of the Grand Lodge of Nebraska. This means that in two short years, Brother Phil will be Grand Master of the Grand lodge of the Most Ancient and Honorable Fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons of Nebraska. It will be the honor of Shiloh Lodge to assist Brother Lorenzen for the next three years.

Thanks to Brother Dale Nelson for all of the work he did in setting up this year’s Sweetheart Dinner. The food was great, and everyone in attendance had a wonderful time.

It looks like we will be conferring a degree this month, so be prepared to step up to the plate and help out. We’ll be calling on you for assistance, so lets get a big crowd to Lodge this month. See you in Lodge!

Fraternally Yours,

J. Scott Oglesby
Worshipful Master-1999

BE AN ACTIVE MEMBER

Be an active member,
The kind that would be missed.
Don’t be just contented
That your name is on the list.

Do attend the meetings
And mingle with the crowd.
Don’t stay at home
And crab both long and loud.

Don’t leave the work for just a few,
And gripe about the clique.
And take time out to visit
A member who is sick.

There is quite a program scheduled,
That means success if done.
And it can be accomplished
With the help of everyone.

So, attend the meetings regularly
And help with hand and heart.
Be an active member
And take an active part.

Think this over, Member,
Are we right or are we wrong ?
Be an active member
Please don’t just belong.

The Acacia Tree

The acacia tree, native of warm climates, has been used for centuries as a symbol of immortality or resurrection. It should be observed that, so far as any symbol has Masonic significance, which ought not be varied to meet the tastes of writers howsoever eminent. By that authority, the Acacia marks the head of the grave and is an emblem of immortality. How this symbol came into the Masonic ritual is uncertain, however there are several references in Virgil’s (70-19 B.C.) Aeneid that are striking similarities to the Hiram legend. Primus, King of Troy, in the beginning of the Trojan War, committed his son, Polydorous, to the care of Polymnester, King of Thrace, and sent him with a great deal of money. But after Troy was taken, the Thracian, for the sake of the money, killed the young prince, and privately buried him. Aeneas, coming into the country, and accidentally plucking up a shrub that was near him on the side of a hill, discovered the murdered Polydorus.
