Shiloh Lodge #327
March 1998 Trestleboard

From the East

Had a great time at the Sweetheart’s Dinner! Thanks to John Maxell for putting on a great function.

I am pleased to report that the Templecraft have voted on a plan to proceed with renovations to the restrooms at the Shi-Oma Masonic Temple. Our Builder’s Club will be working with the contractors to help keep costs down. We are really looking forward to this getting done!

Speaking of the Builder’s Club, if you have not been around the Lodge lately, you probably don’t realize what a great difference this group of Brothers have made around the property. Anyone interested in having some fun with this group, as well as help out with some of their “work in progress”, should call Dale Nelson at 571-1236. They meet every other Wednesday morning. (Sometimes I’m not sure how they get anything done in between the socializing J.) Our hats off to all who participate!

Templecraft also has plans to do some work in the parking lot this Spring, so our Lodge is really going to be looking great.

Be sure and come out April 1st for the Box Dinner Auction. Bid on the “closed box” dinners and then dine with the “chef”. We always have a great time with this and the food is never a disappointment. Help support the Job’s and have fun at the same time - can’t beat it!

Thank You!

Fraternally Yours,

Paul D. Rutherford
Worshipful Master-1998

AN EARLY SPECULATIVE MASON

The earliest record of a "speculative Mason" being admitted to a lodge is the record of the Lodge of Edinburgh, June 8, 1600, when John Boswell, the Laird of Auchenleck, attested his presence with his mark.

AN OLD LANDMARK

One of the most prominent of Masonic historical landmarks is contained in the diary of Elias Ashmole, the celebrated antiquary and founder of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, when he wrote: "1646, October 16, 4:30 p.m. I was made a Freemason at Warrington, in Lancashire, with Col. Henry Mainwaring," etc.

Brother N. Rylands has conducted an exhaustive research into the records of the lodge into which Elias Ashmole was initiated, with the result of finding that there was probably not a single member of the lodge at that time an operative.

WORDS AND SIGNS

Attached to the Harleian ms, (1665) is a scrap of paper on which is written "there is several words and signs of a Freemason to be revealed to you which as you will answer before God at the great and terrible day of judgment you keep secret and not to reveal the same in the ears of any person but to the Masters and fellows of the said society of Freemasons so help me God." This is the earliest mention of words and signs in the Old Charges of Masons.
