Shiloh Lodge #327
June 1999 Trestleboard
From the East
I can’t believe that the year is almost half over – it has gone by so fast. I know that a lot of you are planning your summer vacations, so just a reminder – since we don’t have any candidates going through the chairs, the June business meeting will be the last meeting until September 1. The fun doesn’t stop during the summer, though – Shiloh’s summer picnic is Wednesday, June 16 at 6:00 pm at Cooper Farm. We will need a headcount for the food, so be sure to call in your reservation to one of the Officers as soon as possible. As usual, Shiloh will provide the meat and the members provide a couple of dishes to share. Be sure to bring the kids, as there will be plenty for them to do. If you have any questions, feel free to call me or any of the officers listed in the Trestleboard.
See you in Lodge!
Fraternally yours,
J. Scott Oglesby
Worshipful Master -- 1999

50-Year Members
Shiloh Lodge is honored this year with TWO 50-Year Members – Brother Charles Amidon and Brother Hal McMinn. Both entered the fraternity in 1949. Charlie’s home lodge, Florence Lodge, honored him at a dinner on May 24th, and Shiloh will honor both Hal and Charlie at a special dinner this fall. If you see either one, be sure to offer your congratulations!

Why is Masonry called “A Secret Society”?
Who Knows? We keep our modes of recognition and passwords private, but there is no secrecy as to our organization, our members, principles or purposes. Nor do we know why some non-Masons believe us to be a religious organization. Masonry draws men (and women) from all religions, asking only that the candidates believe in a Supreme Being and in some form of future existence – such as an immortal soul. And while we don’t go around beating the drum concerning our charitable acts, it is no secret that Masonry spends more than $2 million a day in its public charities with a nearly equal sum offered by individuals anonymously. How secret can you keep 22 crippled children’s free hospitals and burn centers operated by the Shrine Masons? But why argue the point. Anybody who wants to learn more about our so-called “secrets” can do so by going to the public library and looking under “M” for Masons or “F” for Freemasonry. Tell the curious to allow plenty of reading time, because books revealing the “secrets” number in the thousands. Or they can go to see Brother Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

We would like to provide support to our brethren in times of distress and celebrate with them in times of gladness. Please immediately inform any of your lodge officers of such information regarding yourself or a brother.
