Shiloh Lodge #327
April 1998 Trestleboard

From the East

Spring is here (at least according to the calendar) and thoughts turn to our Spring Fund-raiser coming up April 11th.

I would like to thank the many brethren who have already responded to our mailing and ask that, if you have not already, please respond today and help us promote this event to your friends and family.

Don’t forget, this event is also a great way to introduce someone you know to our Fraternity. So if you know someone who would make a good Mason, bring both he and his spouse (or significant other) on out on Saturday.

I would like to thank Todd Simpson who is spearheading this event. The Stew promises to be excellent I know I am looking forward to both the Stew and the Brew that day! See you there!

We just finished up the last of the lodges of instruction put on by the Grand Lodge and I would like to thank those of you who came out and participated. The schedule is already out for next March and I encourage everyone to come out, they really are very instructive and helpful.

Hope everyone has a great April!

Thank You!

Fraternally Yours,

Paul D. Rutherford
Worshipful Master-1998

PAUL REVERE

"Col. Paul Revere was initiated in St. Andrew's Lodge, Boston, Mass., Sept. 4, 1760, and was Grand Master from December 12, 1794 to December 27, 1797.

In a letter to the secretary of the Massachusetts Historical Society relating to the events of April, 1775, he said: 'We held our meetings at the Green Dragon tavern. We were so careful that our meetings should be kept secret that every time we met, every person swore upon the Bible, that they would not discover any of our transactions, but to Messr. Hancock, Adams, Doctors Warren, Church, and one or two more.' "

SECRECY

"Within proper bounds, Masons may and should welcome publicity. A secret society is one which seeks to conceal its existence and its objects. Freemasonry is not such a society and is secret only as to the obligations, means of recognition, ballots upon candidates and forms and ceremonies observed in conferring degrees. With the exception of those particulars, Masonry has no reservations from the public. As to everything else -- its design, its moral and religious tenets and the doctrines taught by it, the time and place of its meetings, the names of the officers of a Lodge and those belonging to it -- are all in no way secret and may be known by any one." (Committee on Publicity, Connecticut Grand Lodge).

THE MASON'S CHARACTER

Freemasonry has always been true to its name, and the real Mason is the builder of the temple of his own character. Its mission is to furnish high ideals for the individual, that may be reflected in his actions towards his fellow men. The Masonic ideal teaches that moral and spiritual attainments are far more important than the material and physical.

Spring Cookout

Come out to Shi-Oma Temple on Wednesday, April 29th at 6:00 p.m. for our annual Spring Cookout.

We will have the grill hot and ready, so bring a meat to grill out along with a side dish for this popular pot luck dinner. The Lodge will provide coffee and beverages. No meeting that night, so plenty of time for dinner and socializing.

Mark your calendars today!
